Photo #125 - Sepia - End of an era

I found it ironic that Carmi chose Sepia for this weeks theme for the Thematic Photograph, I passed this place on my way home Wednesday and felt the need to blog about it so I grabbed the camera and got some photos.  These seemed to fit the sepia theme well.

This is the Scenic Motel, ever since I moved to Utah it has been here.  It has recently been torn down.  What makes this motel stand out from others is even though it may have been an old motel and not really up to date, it seemed to be a nice clean comfortable motel.  I think one reason is that it was not on the seedy side of town so it didn't get the hourly rate stays.

Recently this Motel has been torn down. This was the last of the iconic landmarks in this area to go, across the street is Foothill Village that has been updated and is now a strip mall that look like any other strip mall built in the 90s.  Next door has been a Marie Calendars that still had the look it had for years which is now a Red Robin.  There was an old fashioned service station next to that.
I found a topographical map that showed Foothill Blvd, the road this Motel was located on, used to be Highway US-40, since Interstate 80 appeared I believe the Feds took away the funding for this and it is now a state funded highway (Utah 186).  I can only imagine the sort of US 40 traveler that has stayed at this motel.  It reminded me of days that the road trip was the vacation, and the destination only a place to land.  The movie "Cars" does a fine job of relating back to that era "Cars didn't drive on it to make great time. They drove on it to have a great time. "  There are times I travel the old US roads just to enjoy the small towns on the way, this is the kind of traveler that Motels of this sort were built for.

I found photos of the Scenic Motel when it was still open here on Flickr posted by arts enthusiast.   Thank you for taking them and having them available for people to view.

The results are in, so much for BAS

Yeah the results are in for the blizzard of 2010.  Going back to the link on my last post, according to the slide 2 the following was going to occur.

Arctic cold front to pass through Utah beginning around 5pm Tuesday and progress through the state.
CHECK.  Yes it got really cold

Storm will bring 3-6 hours of heavy snow.
NEGATIVE -I got about half an hour of heavy snow, and two hours of light snow = 2 ½ inches of snow

Blowing and drifting snow are anticipated
CHECK - I was driving home from Draper and was around 106th south when it hit around 5:45pm, the wind was blowing pretty good, but the roads were merely wet.  By the time I was headed east on I-215 maybe five or six minutes later the wind had died down.  There was a lot of strong wind before the snow hit though

Whiteout conditions will occur.
NEGATIVE – It was dark and hard to see with my headlights on, but if I turned them off I could see around ½ to ¾ of a mile.

Turning very with snow covered roads.
CHECK – Yesterday it got up to 39°F or 4°C, last night the low was 10°F or -12°C. It is currently 18°F or -8°C, that is pretty cold for Salt Lake.  National Weather service is predicting 3°F or -16°C for tonight, yeah I would say that if very cold.  The roads have been snow covered

All in all yes it did get windy.  Yes it was cold.  The timing was almost spot on even.  However, from what I saw it was not the huge storm they were making it out to be.  I have seen many storms come through like it.   Here are some pics from last night and this morning.  I copied the snow totals from the NWS website and pasted them after the pictures.

BAS coming, be warned.

I just got the briefing from noaa, and we have a big a.. storm coming.  Blizzard conditions.  Here is the briefing.  If you live in Utah or areas nearby you may be wise to check it out.

Ok, so it did snow.

Yeah, 9 and half inches on the car.  Since this is the first snow, and the high yesterday hit 55 F at 12:30 yesterday, the snow wet and heavy.  This morning I did not want to shovel my driveway, so I went for the search for where we hid the snowblower last spring.  After I found it, I turned on the gas, primed it, and pulled...   and pulled and pulled and pulled.  Just about the time I was thinking I had gotten the workout I would have shoveling it kicked over.  Had to run and get gas at one point, but the job is done.
Now the down side, as is often the case with snow this wet, there were many casualties last night.  I saw several downed branches and on 2300 East the wires were down across the road.
In our own back yard we had casualties too.  Two trees bent over, not too big a deal, clean off the snow they should be ok.  But we did loose one, as you can see from these pics.

And this is my left over apple in the tree.

SNOW.

Started snowing yesterday at around five, I always love the first snow, wish I had time last night to go out and play in it, empty parking lots rule. We got about 9 1/2 inches at our house, here's what it looks like.

Thematic Photo #124.

For as long as I can remember there has been some kind of family picnic - reunion every year around Boston, MA where I originally hail from.  A couple years ago we went back there for the reunion and had a great time in spite of the rain.  The next year we did a reunion in Salt Lake and thought it would be cool to set up bocce ball in the yard of the park.  It was a lot of fun and a good place to play it.  I didn't feel it would do justice just posting one picture, the action makes the set.

More to the kitchen

Well, we got more done on the kitchen... It is getting so close we can taste it.  The island is put together and the wall built.  Here are the latest pics, all we are waiting on is the plumber to come and plumb a sink, then we get the counters measured.  Two weeks later, we'll be eating it up.

Also, I was on my way home from work and the sunset looked so good I HAD to get pics, please excuse the phone pic quality, it really doesn't do it justice.

-Mr.

The last of the black and white theme photos.

These pictures speak for themselves, only location comments, the statue is in Mrs mom's back yard, the bee was taken in our front yard.

#123, Black and White and follow up.

I always enjoyed the look of picture taken with a wide angle lens.  After I purchased one I got to playing with it in my backyard, this first picture is the outcome.
There is something spectacular about southern Utah, this second photo is shot in Goblin Valley north of Hanksville, Utah.  Most of the photos taken there would be useless in monochrome since so much of what makes southern Utah is the vivid colors of the rocks, however sometimes there are shapes and shadows that don't lose their appeal with the loss of color.

We spend a fair amount of time on the local Nissan forum, I take care of the car of the month polls for this site.  The winner of the poll is offered a photo shoot by me for them.  The black car won recently so I planned a shoot for this car, while at it I thought why not add Mrs' white one and get a couple shots for the T.P..  Here is a black and a white Nissan Sentra SE-R.

For those who were wondering about that picture of the ice, here are a couple of other shots showing how much it was off the glass.  I found this intriguing and thought it necessary to capture.
